Tampa Bay hosts the Atlanta Falcons at Raymond James Stadium on Sunday, November 1, kickoff 1:00 p.m. Eastern Time (7:00 p.m. CET), on FOX. ESPN lists the Buccaneers as 2.5-point favorites with a total of 44.5 (DraftKings), while other books we checked sit between 44.5 and 46.5. Lines move, so treat that as a snapshot. The Bucs are 2-5 after a 43-13 win in Carolina, and the Falcons arrive off a 29-20 win over San Francisco.
Key facts
- Tampa Bay beat Carolina 43-13 on October 25 and improved to 2-5.
- Bucky Irving carried 24 times for 106 yards and two touchdowns against the Panthers.
- Emeka Egbuka was a limited participant in Wednesday's practice with a concussion and a foot injury.
- Kenny Gainwell (hip) did not practice on Wednesday.
- ESPN lists Tampa Bay as a 2.5-point favorite with a total of 44.5, via DraftKings.
One caveat before the calls: the only official report we could verify is Wednesday's. Wednesday practices are an early indicator, not a final status, so check Friday's report before you lock a lineup.
The matchup
Atlanta's defense is built against the run. SI has the Falcons fourth in the NFL in EPA per rush on defense, allowing 3.8 yards per carry, and Football Nation lists them at 88.9 rushing yards allowed per game. The same page shows them giving up 255.6 passing yards per game, so the easier road to points runs through the air, even if the Bucs rarely needed it last week.
The Panthers game was a blowout built on the ground. Tampa Bay ran for 258 yards, forced two interceptions and sacked Bryce Young five times, and Mayfield attempted only 11 passes. 4for4 suggests discounting most of that offensive output, and we agree: a 30-point win in a dominant script tells you less about volume than a close game would.
Buccaneers start/sit/flex
Bucky Irving, RB, start. Irving carried 24 times for 106 yards and two touchdowns against Carolina, roughly half of the team's 49 carries. Atlanta's run defense caps the ceiling, but the workload is not in question and he is not on Wednesday's injury report. He is a solid RB2 with upside in any format.
Kenny Gainwell, RB, sit. Gainwell did not practice Wednesday with a hip injury. Even healthy, his role is the passing-down work behind Irving, which does not support a start in this matchup.
Sean Tucker, RB, sit. Tucker scored on a 46-yard run against Carolina, but 4for4 notes his 7-carry, 52-yard, one-touchdown line came in short-yardage and garbage-time work and should not be trusted going forward.
Baker Mayfield, QB, flex (QB2 range). Mayfield was a full participant Wednesday with his right thumb injury, one week after returning from the dislocated thumb. He went 7 of 11 for 64 yards and a touchdown in the blowout, which tells us little. Atlanta's pass defense is the softer side, and a normal game script should bring more throws, but until the volume shows up we treat him as a streamer, not a lock.
Chris Godwin Jr., WR, start (WR3). Godwin was the Bucs' most targeted receiver against Carolina (4for4 counts five of the team's nine targets; box-score sites differ slightly on the exact total). With Emeka Egbuka in doubt, he is the safest receiver on the team. Football Nation also lists him as a flex with upside if fully active.
Emeka Egbuka, WR, flex (only if cleared). Egbuka was limited Wednesday and is still dealing with a concussion and a foot injury. He missed Week 7, and Todd Bowles called him questionable at the start of the week. Before the injury he had 28 catches for 240 yards and two touchdowns. If he clears the concussion protocol, he is a start. If there is any doubt on Sunday morning, bench him and move on.
Tez Johnson, WR, flex (if Egbuka is out). Johnson played 41 snaps with Egbuka sidelined and caught two passes for 33 yards and a touchdown. His role grows if Egbuka sits, but it is a WR4 role at best.
Cade Otton, TE, flex (streaming only). Otton played 56 snaps against Carolina according to PFF numbers carried by Yahoo, so the usage is dependable. The production is thin, so he is a streamer in deeper leagues.
Chase McLaughlin, K, start. McLaughlin made field goals of 22 and 44 yards against Carolina. With a modest 44.5 total, this is not a high-scoring forecast, but kickers on teams that move the ball on the ground still get chances.
Buccaneers D/ST, start. Tampa Bay is third in EPA per play on defense per SI, and the unit produced five sacks, two interceptions and a fumble-return touchdown in Carolina. Antoine Winfield Jr. went from a non-contact jersey last week to a full participant Wednesday. Atlanta's offense scores about 24 points per game, so this is a start, not a lock.
Player | Position | Verdict | Confidence |
|---|---|---|---|
Bucky Irving | RB | Start | High |

Buccaneers D/ST | DST | Start | Medium |
Baker Mayfield | QB | Flex (QB2 range) | Low |
Emeka Egbuka | WR | Flex, only if cleared | Low |
Tez Johnson | WR | Flex if Egbuka is out | Low |
Cade Otton | TE | Flex (streaming) | Low |
Kenny Gainwell | RB | Sit | High |
Sean Tucker | RB | Sit | Medium |
Falcons players to start against the Bucs
Bijan Robinson, RB, start. Robinson carried 20 times for 63 yards and caught all five targets for 59 yards against San Francisco. He is a weekly start, but 4for4 and Football Nation both treat him as a start regardless of matchup, and the receiving work offsets a tough run defense.
Drake London, WR, start. London led Atlanta in targets last week according to 4for4, and Football Nation calls him a strong WR2. A secondary allowing 255.6 yards per game to passers is a place for him to feast.
Michael Penix Jr., QB, flex. Penix threw 25 of 34 for 213 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions against the 49ers, and has nine touchdowns against one interception this season. Football Nation calls him a high-end QB2 and a streamer in one-QB leagues. Tampa Bay's defense is a real obstacle, so we would not push him past that.
Kyle Pitts, TE, flex. Pitts has scored in each of his last three games, per 4for4, but the same page expects a modest 5/45/0 line in a tough matchup and notes he ran only 63% of routes last week.
Brian Robinson Jr., RB, sit. Robinson did not practice Wednesday with a hamstring injury, per the official report.
Waivers and streaming
If Egbuka's status is still unclear by Saturday, Tez Johnson is the cheapest way to hedge. Kickers and defenses are the usual place to stream, but this week the Bucs D/ST is a rostered unit worth keeping if you own it. Do not chase Tucker off one touchdown.
