Bucs fantasy scoreboard, Week 1: Bucky Irving leads the way

Tampa Bay opened the season with a 33-27 loss at Cincinnati, and the box score tells a familiar story for anyone who watched: a lot of yards, not enough finish. Four fumbles did the damage, three of them Baker Mayfield's own, but one Buccaneer still turned in the best fantasy day on the roster. Bucky Irving led all Bucs scorers with 20.3 PPR points on a combined 13 touches for 93 yards and a touchdown.

Irving's floor and ceiling both showed up

Irving's line had everything fantasy managers want from a lead back: a rushing touchdown, seven catches on seven targets, and 93 total yards. It also had the one blemish that keeps him from a truly elite week, a lost fumble. Bucs Nation's recap of the loss noted Irving looked explosive and decisive in new offensive coordinator Zac Robinson's wide zone scheme, which lines up with a workload spread almost evenly between the run and the pass game. The fumble was recovered by Cincinnati's Boye Mafe, one of four Tampa Bay turnovers on the day.

Baker Mayfield's fantasy line reads fine on the surface, 11.6 points from clean, efficient passing and a rushing score, but the box score hides the bigger story. Mayfield lost three fumbles, and per SI's Bucs Gameday recap, four total Tampa Bay turnovers led to 24 of Cincinnati's 33 points. One of those fumbles was returned for a Bengals touchdown. A quarterback can throw for 216 yards at a 0 interception clip and still be the reason his team lost.

The rest of the passing game

Emeka Egbuka was the clear second read behind Irving, turning six targets into 63 yards for the highest-volume game among the wide receivers. Chris Godwin Jr. and rookie-year contributor Ted Hurst III each carved out a piece of the target share, with Godwin adding a bit of extra value on a single carry. Cade Otton's five targets were the most on the team outside Irving and Egbuka, even if only three turned into catches. Chase McLaughlin quietly put up 9 points on two field goals and three extra points, a reminder that a kicker with a lot of scoring opportunities is worth rostering.

The disappointments

Kenny Gainwell managed only 2.8 PPR points on six touches, a token complementary role behind Irving rather than a real change-of-pace threat this week. Tez Johnson was the only Buccaneer to finish in negative territory, with a single target that went unconverted and a stuffed carry for negative yardage. Neither is an alarming one-week sample on its own, but both are worth watching if the touch distribution does not shift.

The Buccaneers defense, by contrast, was the second-best scoring unit on the roster. A sack, an interception and two touchdowns scored by the defense itself pushed the unit to 14.0 points even with 33 points allowed working against the tally.

What it means for next week

Irving is the clear focal point of this offense in the passing game as well as the run, and seven targets in a season opener is a workload worth building a lineup around regardless of matchup. Egbuka's target share makes him a solid WR2 play, and Godwin remains involved enough to stay in lineups. Mayfield's fumble problem is the bigger story for team success than for his individual fantasy value, since none of it shows up in his scoring line, but it is worth watching whether Tampa Bay's coaching staff adjusts snap counts or ball-security drills in practice this week. Gainwell owners in deeper leagues should not expect a bigger role until Irving's workload changes.

How we score

This scoreboard uses standard scoring rules: passing at 0.04 points per yard, 4 points per passing touchdown and -2 per interception; rushing and receiving at 0.1 points per yard and 6 points per touchdown; a lost fumble is -2. Receptions are worth 1.0 point in PPR, 0.5 in half-PPR and 0 in standard leagues, which is the only difference between the three columns above. Kickers earn 3 points per field goal and 1 per extra point, with a penalty for a miss. Team defense/special teams scores on sacks, turnovers, touchdowns and a points-allowed tier. Two-point conversions are not included, since none were recorded in this box score.
